New Feature: Embed Your Recipes Into Posts

Now there is no need to type out recipes twice!  You can simply enter your recipe into Recipage, and then embed the HTML code directly into your post.  Not only is this a huge time-saver, the code is also formatted to be compliant with Google’s h-recipe search,  making your recipes more likely to pop up in Google searches!

To see a working example of an embedded recipe, check out this post over on Daily Garnish.

Here’s how you can use this new feature…

1.  Enter your recipe into Recipage in its entirety, and click publish.  Once your recipe has been published, click back to your recipe box and select the new recipe.  With your recipe selected, click the new “getHTML” link that appears in the menu.

2.  Once you click getHTML, you’ll be taken to a new screen with a very long piece of code.  You’ll want to copy the ENTIRE strand – make sure you get it all!

3.  Next you paste the code into the HTML editor of your blogging software.  If you are writing in Windows Live Writer, that option is in the bottom left corner, and you’ll want to make sure you’ve selected the “source” tab before pasting in your code:

Windows Live Writer tabs

If you are publishing directly in WordPress, that HTML option is in the top right corner of your editing box.  Make sure you’ve selected the “HTML” tab before pasting your code:

Wordpress admin tabs

4.  You can paste the code wherever you want it to appear in your post.  Once pasted, click back over to the Visual or Edit screens and you should see the embedded recipe.  In the editing screen, the recipe won’t show the bar with social media icons (because it is in an i-frame), but it will appear once the post is published.

5.  Once your recipe has been pasted into your post, you can insert pictures between instructions, add additional text above and below, and make any other necessary adjustments.

By embedding your recipes into your posts, you’re making your recipes more searchable, easier to print and share,  and saving yourself the trouble of entering recipes in both your posts and your Recipage.  We hope you enjoy the newest feature!

(Note: this feature only works with the RecipagePRO platform)

Introducing the New (Free!) Recipage Platform!

We have been so excited about the success of Recipage since we launched in February 2011.  One of our goals all along has been to launch a second (free!) version of Recipage, in addition to the current more advanced model we also offer for $8 per month.  We are happy to announce that the free version of Recipage is finally here!

So how does this new version of Recipage differ from the paid service?

Our paid service is still a big part of what we do, and will now be known as RecipagePro.  For our Pro users, the recipe pages are embedded directly into individual blogs.  Users can search, browse, and view recipes within a blogger’s site, and the subsequent pageviews and site traffic all translate directly to that blogger.

Our new free Recipage system looks and works just like the professional version, with the exception being that the recipe page is not located directly within the blogger’s site.  Instead, we will provide users with a custom link (ex. www.recipage.com/blogname) to a recipe page that will house all of their content.  Users will still be able to search, browse, print, and more!

While some bloggers may prefer the more professional RecipagePro system, our goal is to provide a platform that works for everyone.  We hope with the addition of our new free service, we have done just that.

Head over to the Recipage homepage to sign up!

What’s New in My Settings?

One of our greatest resources and tools for growth is all the great feedback we get from our users.  You asked, and we listened!  We have quite a few new features in the My Settings tab that we hope you guys will be excited to use.  Here’s what to look for…

Customizations:  This page will be the spot where you can change all the personalized settings to your Recipage.  It’s where you make your page fit in with your site through custom font and color options, search result formatting options, and other custom features that best suit your needs.  In addition to our old features, here are a few new ones:

  • New Keyword Categories – Many of you have asked for the ability to add more keywords and more customizations to this section.  We have added five new categories, all of which have pre-loaded keywords, as well as the ability to add your own!
    • Key Ingredient – add your own key ingredients (i.e. pasta, grains, fish, etc.) and make searching even easier than before.  Once a key ingredient has been added, it will show up in your permanent list in the future.
    • Occasion – now users can search for recipes surrounding holidays and events!
    • Season – winter, spring, summer fall – there are recipes for them all!
    • Cuisine – showcase the best of your ethnic cooking by allowing users to browse for Chinese, Thai, Indian, and much more.
    • Dessert Types – this category can be used by anyone, but was created with baking and dessert blogs in mind.
  • Instruction Lists – another new feature to look for within the Customizations tab is the now-customizable instruction lists.  Switch between a numbered or bulleted list – whatever you prefer.

Sidebar Widgets:  We are really excited about this new feature!  Now you have the option to add two new widgets to your blog layout:

  • Sidebar Slideshow – This is a rotating slideshow of the same recipes you have selected as your “Featured Recipes” on your recipe homepage.  Users can click the links to be taken to individual recipes.
  • Sidebar Keyword Browse – This widget allows users to browse from any page on your blog – not just your recipe page itself.  Browse by any category to be taken to the search results for that keyword.

We hope you enjoy using these features, and look forward to hearing your feedback!

Understanding Our Two Platforms: Free vs Pro

You might be thinking…

Why would I pay for RecipagePRO if Recipage is free?

Just as there are many types of food, there are many different types of bloggers.  We have received a lot of different requests and interest in our recipe management too, and we felt the best way to accommodate all of these was through the creation of two platforms.

Traditional Recipage is a free service that can be used by anyone – both bloggers and non-bloggers.  All you need is a love of food and recipes that you want to share!  Recipage users are given a custom personalized link to their individual Recipage, that they can then share with their readers and followers.  This system is also compatible with every blogging platform, including WordPress.com sites.  We are able to offer this service for free because it is hosted on www.recipage.com, rather than directly on your blog.  For users that want the ability to embed the Recipage system directly onto their site, we created RecipagePRO.

RecipagePRO is housed on a large dedicated server with round-the-clock monitoring. We store all the data and images for your recipes, and the content is served to the browser by us. While we store and serve the content, the page views are all yours. Every click on your recipe page, supported by RecipagePRO, is a page view for you. We don’t pass ads through in the content, so as not to conflict with any of your advertising agreements. Developing a similar recipe page could cost an individual in the thousands, putting it out of reach for all but the large corporate sites. We’re leveling the playing field for our favorite writers, the independent food writers.

Whichever Recipage system you choose, we hope you enjoy using this tool to share your recipes with your readers!
